Irene

I stretched luxuriously, the sheets tangling between my legs when I heard the shout coming from outside the room. Killian sat up immediately, looking alert. Without a word, he climbed out of bed and pulled on his trousers. Hurriedly donning his shirt, he hurried towards the door. Just as he was about to push it open, he glanced back at me.

“Put some clothes on, Irene. Don’t delay.”

Opening the door, he stepped out. My body felt sore after our recent lovemaking and I was yearning for a nap and some food. However, the urgency in Killian’s voice didn’t go unnoticed. Climbing out of bed, I headed towards the wooden cabinet that had all my clothes. I took out a pair of boots and a simple blue cotton dress.

I’d just donned the dress when I heard Peckham’s urgent voice outside the door. Picking up the boots, I moved towards the threshold to hear what the matter was. Why was the man so scared? There was nothing frightening in the house to warrant such a sudden, fearful reaction.

“What should we do, Boss?” Peckham kept asking. “We can’t get past them. Even you’re not strong to take them all.”

“There’s got to be guns around here,” said Killian.

“They will be alerted as soon as you shoot.”

“Calm down, Tom. Let me think.”

Pushing open the door, I stepped out in the door. Both Killian and Peckham looked at me with anxiety. “What is going on?” I asked, not liking how tensed Killian seemed.

“Did Nicole keep weapons in the house?” Killian asked, stepping before me. “Did she have guns?”

“She did. But why would do you need one?”

“Come with me, Irene.” Taking me by the arm, he marched towards the casement set at the furthest wall in the corridor. When we reached it, he pointed a finger in the distance. “Do you see them? The men approaching the wall?”

I focused in the direction he was pointing. At first, I didn’t see anything but soon my eyes detected movement among the green foliage. Several men were advancing through the small gate set in the wall. They wore black outfits and looked tiny because of the distance.

“Who are they?” I asked, looking up at him.

“I don’t know but it’s got to be the people Nicole knew. They must’ve gotten the news of her death and have come for the same thing we did. You.”

Fear sliced through me. “Do they want me to keep me confined here too?” I swallowed the sudden lump in my throat as I pushed against Killian’s chest. “I don’t want to stay here any longer.”

His hands came to hold my shoulders. “Pull yourself together, Irene. I won’t let anyone take you away from me.”

“But what do we do? Tom is right. There are too many of them.”

“Show me where the guns are.”

I shook my head. “It won’t be much help if we just have you shooting at them. You can’t stop all the men. There could be others behind them.”

Killian’s face turned into stone. His grip on my shoulders tightened.
